LearnHigher social learning space at Bournemouth

What are the benefits for the students?

The LearnHigher Centre provides a collaborative social space for students to work and learn together. Students can also use it as a space for collaborative work if it is not already booked for a particular activity. The LearnHigher Centre is an integral part of student life at Bournemouth University because:

  • It is accessible to all students and members of staff at the University as well as to the local community in Dorset for events related to education;
  • Students and members of staff think that the Centre fits with their educational activities;
  • It offers a more relaxed learning environment.

The LearnHigher Centre is exclusively used for non-teaching purposes.  The room has provided space for an impressive range of activities such as exhibitions on the history of Dorset, sessions on student citizenship issues and activities on volunteering. The feeling of all the users of the Centre is that 'the room maximises the effect it can have on people who have events there'. The groups and teams that have used the centre include amongst others:

  • The Dorset Development Education Centre (DEED) along with the Global Perspectives Group and Aimhigher Team of Bournemouth University for their Citizenship Taster Days; (watch the video1) (watch the video2)

The launch of the Centre

watch-video_r1_c3.jpgThe LearnHigher Centre at Bournemouth University is designed to provide a space for students to use for any collaborative social learning activity that enhances their personal development. The official launch of the room took place on 25 October 2006 after extensive refurbishment which lasted for several months. Professor Paul Curran, Vice-Chancellor of Bournemouth University, declared the Centre open by emphasising on the role of Personal Development Planning as 'a key element of our approach to Releasing Potential'.

At the launch, Chris Keenan, Learning and Teaching Fellow at Bournemouth University and the Bournemouth LearnHigher learning area co-ordinator, described the transformation and refurbishment of this space at Talbot campus with the Centre for Excellence in Teaching and Learning (CETL) funding. She also commented on the aims and objectives of LearnHigher which is the country's biggest collaborative HEFCE funded CETL. Bournemouth University's role within the CETL is to develop, share and broker resources, case studies and examples of good practice in Personal Development Planning.
